Poetry: Mischievous Child

Sometimes God is like a mischievous child.

O, don't look so shocked, you know it's
True!

What do I mean?

It's just like this:
Before setting out on a long voyage,
A sailor gave his beloved a letter
With instructions not to open It
Until his return.

Faithfully the lover waited
Keeping the letter close at all
Times.

Days passed,
Weeks passed,
Months,
A whole year passed without news from the sailor.

Exasperated the beloved opened the letter...
With such a playful passion and teasing devotion,
The words almost danced themselves off the page.

Just then the beloved heard the sailor
Laughing in the attic!
Descending stiffly,
Smiling broadly,
He asked,
"What took you so long to open that
Damn letter?"

Don't you think God asked Adam and Eve the same question
After He found that apple core?
